The Truth About Vigan Empanada
I’ve heard some people say that the famed Vigan empanada isn’t really all that, but to them I say, you’ve just been eating at the wrong place. THE place to eat Vigan empanada is at Irene’s, located on Salcedo St., behind the Syquia Mansion. The better known place, the Empanadaan at the Vigan Plaza actually attracts more tourists because it’s at the center of the city but believe you me, you won’t regret walking all the way to Calle Crisologo to Irene’s.
It doesn’t have a fancy setting and you can just forget about ambience, but if not having these precluded good food, Bobby Chin wouldn’t be popular. Empanada is similar to the Mexican Taco: it’s basically grated young papaya,Vigan longganisa and a whole egg all stuffed in a crispy shell made from ground rice then deep fried. It is best enjoyed with Sukang Iloko (cane vinegar) and small red onions. *sigh* Irene’s empanada is the best I’ve tasted, and i’ve been eating empanada basically my whole life. They give you freshly cooked empanada made on the spot: the shell is light, crispy and tasty, the papaya compliments the Vigan longganisa very nicely. All the other empanadas i’ve tried have heavier shells or have too much cabbage or not enough longganisa.
so there. :) (god that made me hungry all over again)
